Stabilised and dyed Curly birch scales. This species is also known as Karelian birch, or birch burl. Knife handle blanks are perfect for carving full tang handles. These come in a set of 10 pcs. This non-toxic and non-flammable resin stabilized exotic wood is an excellent material for carving classic steak knives handles.

Dimensions: (may vary slightly)
Width: 37 mm
Thickness: 17 mm
Length: 118 mm

We stabilize our Curly birch wood with non-toxic and non-flammable cactus juice. The purpose of stabilization/polymerisation of the wood is to make the birch burl wood even 3x harder than oak wood. Stabilization brings out the wood’s natural beauty. And most importantly, as a result this process makes Curly birch wood resistant to humidity.

Please notice stabilized Curly birch scale is a natural material. Each Curly birch blank pattern and colour is unique. Resin stabilised knife handle blank can (but not necessarily) contain small decorative knots or easily repairable inner cracks.
The block comes already lightly sanded and is ready for woodworking.

Additional information about Curly birch:

Curly birch (Betula pendula var. Carelica) is not a separate species but is a genetical variation of Silver Birch, which grows only in small area in Scandinavia, Karelia and Finland.

Curly birch grainy pattern wood belongs to the world’s ten most expensive among the exotic wood. Nevertheless, this wood is considered a sustainable wood. Most importantly due to the fact that most of the exotic woods come from tropical rainforests. Curly birch is a light-demanding and slow-growing tree and therefore this valuable quality wood is cultivated as stands in former agricultural areas or other nutritious, rich soils on sunny slopes.

Even though Curly birch is considered as an exotic wood, the trade of this wood is not regulated with Cites regulation (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). So, the manufacturing and use of this beautiful exotic wood does not harm wildlife and natural diversity of tropical rainforests.
