Curly birch has a lot of names. “Birch burl” or “Masur birch” are well known names of curly birch in Scandinavia. These names characterize the beautiful pattern of the wood. The pattern may remind you of marble, others compare it to a birds-eye maple or burl.  These scales are stabilized in a professional grade. Stabilized handle wood comes in pairs.

Description of the scales

Premium grade scales are almost fully covered with the characteristic Masur birch flame, along with curly patterns combined with a flame-like surface and stunning silky radiance. The main colour of scales is light brown. The wood is  stabilized throughout with cactus juice based resin. Scales are lightly sanded but not polished. The stabilized handle wood has natural colors and patterns which glow gloriously after finishing! Perfect for carving full knife handles or any other DIY craft.

Please notice that wood is a natural material. This means that each Curly birch blank pattern and colour is unique. The scales that you will receive are similar to the ones shown in the pictures.
The block comes already lightly sanded and ready for woodworking.

Additional information about stabilized handle wood

Curly birch (Betula pendula var. Carelica) is not a separate species. It is a genetical variation of Silver Birch, which can be found only in small areas of Scandinavia, Karelia and Finland.

Curly birch’s grainy wood belongs to the world’s ten most expensive among the exotic woods. For example, the items made of this wood were higly valued in emperors’ palaces. Nevertheless, curly birch wood is a sustainable wood. Mostly due to the fact that most exotic woods come from tropical rainforests. Curly birch is a light-demanding and slow-growing tree. Therefore this valuable, quality wood is cultivated on stands in former agricultural areas or on other nutritious, rich soils with sunny slopes.

Even though Curly birch is considered an exotic wood, the trade of this wood is not regulated with CITES regulation (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). So, the manufacturing and use of this beautiful exotic wood does not harm wildlife and natural diversity of tropical rainforests. Our plantation curly birch trees are certified clones of famous Finnish curly birch tree called “Visa Kuningatar“.
